Summary: St. Francis Xavier’s Cathedral located in Coles Park, Cleveland Town, Bengaluru is one of the most iconic landmarks of the Cantonment area of Bengaluru. Dating back to the mid 19th Century this Cathedral holds a special place in the history of the city of Bengaluru. As such a truly special wedding venue.
History of St. Francis Xavier’s Cathedral
St.Francis Xavier’s Cathedral has a long history entwined with the history of the city of Bengaluru. Fr. J.B. Servanton was the priest instrumental in setting up the Cathedral and its parish that we see today. He started his work as parish priest in 1898. His hard work saw his parish grow from the hundreds to about 15,000 Catholic families of Bengaluru. His immense contribution to the city can be seen in the fact of the circle near the Cathedral being named after him.
The land on which the Cathedral stands was bought for the handsome price of Rs.1000/- from a one Mrs. Zulime Watkins. The Church was established in 1851.
The foundation for the present Church was laid on 1911. It was Fr. J.B. Servanton who raised the funds for it and oversaw the construction. This took nearly 21 years with the Church being officially open on 26th May 1932. It was chosen as a Cathedral in 1940 and consecrated by Rev. Dr. Thomas Pothacamury on 24th January 1948.
The Church can accommodate about 5000 people. This evidences the spaciousness and vastness of the space. The beautiful structure made of granite stones and Mangaluru roof tiles adds a certain grandeur to the frame. Together with this the paintings, stained glass paintings, eloquent carvings and massive pillars all add to the sobriety of the space.

The Church is located in one of the older parts of Bengaluru – the Cantonment area. As such this is the place where one can immerse oneself in the historical landmarks of the city.
Halasuru Kere
For decades Bangaloreans knew this asUlsoor Lake. Much like the name of the city there has been a reclaiming and a restructuring. Something that reminds you that this city existed much before the British stepped in here. And continues to exist and thrive after. Dating back to the time of Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru it is one of the largest lakes in the city covering about 100 acres. It has several small islands dotting the scene. It is believed that the lake as it is now seen owes its definitions to Sir Lewin Bentham Bowring, the Commissioner of Bangalore in British times.
Coles Park
Spread over 12 acres, Coles Park in Frazer Town Bengaluru dates back to the early 20th century. It has a playground and walking trails. A great place for a picnic or to catch a breath away from the hustle and bustle of the city. A chance to step back into history.
Albert Bakery
A 100 plus years old Bakery dating back to colonial times. It is located on Mosque Road in the Cantonment area. And is another historical landmark in the city. The bakery was set up in 1902 by Mohammad Yacoob, supplying bread to the British and Anglo Indian residents of the area. Must try the Khova Naan, the cocktail samosas and the biscuits.
