History of Holy Ghost Church
This Church is located in Richard’s Town in North Bengaluru. The area came into being during the British occupation of India. Hence the roads, the buildings, the Church owe their architectural ancestry to the British/European architects.
Holy Ghost Church in Bengaluru is the first Redemptorist Parish in India. The Redemptorists, also known by their official name as the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (CSsR) are a Catholic religious congregation. On January 5th 1939 three founders Frs. Matthew Hickey, Gerard Mc Donnell and Leo O’Halloran from the Dublin (Irish) Province landed by boat in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The intention was to open a chapter, a new one indeed in Asia for the Redemptorists.
In August 1938, formal permission was given to Fr. Hugo Kerr, Provincial Superior of the Dublin Province for a foundation. By now a number of missions from Ireland and Australia were preaching in India. This was done in both English and Tamil.
On June 27th 1943 the novitiate was opened in Bangalore. Joseph Anthonysamy and Bro. Alphonsus along with 2 others were the first novices. Thus the Seminary formally began on the 2nd of February 1945 with several international students joining it.
Coming back to the Church, it was set up on 24th May 1953 by His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Pothagamury, Bishop of Bangalore. It was also declared a Parish. The Parish named after the Holy Spirit (Ghost) is dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Furthermore this Parish today consists of 4250 families with 17,000 Catholics. Apart from the Parish itself, the Church attracts thousands of visitors.
